Preparation & Post-treatment Guidelines for Cosmetic & Laser Tattoo Removal

These instructions will cover what to avoid, what steps to take, and what signs to watch out for during your laser tattoo removal journey.

Caring for your skin: Pre & Post Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment

Prior to undergoing laser tattoo removal treatment, it is vital to take proper care of your skin to ensure your safety, comfort, and optimal treatment outcomes.

Understanding and following the guidelines for pre and post-treatment care is crucial to minimise the risk of scarring and achieve the best results possible. It is essential to thoroughly read and adhere to the instructions provided and those given by the practitioner.

Preparation Before Treatment Session:

To ensure the best results and minimise potential complications, please follow these guidelines prior to your session:

  • Avoid exercising on the day of your treatment session.
  • Refrain from applying any products, such as lotions, creams or makeup, on or around the areas to be treated. Keep skin dry and clean.
  • Minimise sun exposure and avoid using tanning beds or self-tanning products for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment. If the treated area is regularly exposed to the sun, apply SPF50 sunscreen to protect the skin.
  • Make sure the area to be treated is free from any rash, spots, irritation, or inflammation. Inform your practitioner of any skin conditions or concerns before the treatment.

Aftercare:

To ensure proper healing and minimise potential complications, it is crucial to follow these aftercare instructions following your removal treatment.

  • Avoid exposing the treated area to UV light, including sunlight and tanning beds, as well as self-tanning products. This helps prevent hyperpigmentation, darkening of the skin. Cover the treated area with a dressing or use an SPF50 sunscreen for at least 4 weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid heat treatments such as spas, steam rooms and saunas for 4 weeks after treatment. Heat can increase sensitivity and potential irritation.
  • Refrain from vigorous exercise for 4 days after treatment. Physical activity can increase blood flow to the treated area and potentially cause discomfort or adverse effects.
  • Avoid submerging the treated area into a hot bath or shower for 48 hours after the treatment.
  • Avoid taking too hot of baths and showers for 2 weeks after treatment. Instead, opt for cooler baths and showers to prevent unnecessary heat and irritation while healing.
  • After bathing or showering, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel or cloth while avoiding rubbing or exfoliating the area, as this can cause further damage to the skin, prolonging the healing.
  • Steer clear from chlorinated water, such as swimming pools, for 7 days after treatment. Chlorine can irritate the treated skin and delay the healing process.
  • Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 3 days after treatment. This allows the skin to heal without interference.
  • Please refrain from using perfumed products on the treated area until it is fully healed. Fragrances can cause irritation or allergic reactions.
  • Do not scratch or pick at the treatment area if blistering or crusting occurs. This can lead to scarring; the area must stay clean and dry.
  • Avoid shaving, waxing, tweezing, and threading the treated area for 2 weeks after treatment. These activities can further irritate the skin.
  • Delay any other laser treatments on the same area for 4 weeks after treatment. This allows the skin to recover fully.
  • If needed, apply an ice pack wrapped in a protected cloth to the treated area to reduce pain, discomfort, or irritation.
  • Apply an aloe vera gel to keep the area cool while healing; this helps with any irritation or itching that may occur. Only apply a small layer when needed, and keep the area clean.
  • Wear loose-fitted clothing to avoid friction on the treated area for 3 days after treatment. This prevents rubbing and irritating the area or causing further blisters and sores.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to help heal and flush all the toxins out.
  • If a dressing is provided after the treatment, remove it after 3 hours to allow the wound to breath without it becoming damp or sweaty, which can harm the skin.
  • Don’t be tempted to scratch or rub the area during the healing process.
  • If blisters appear, please refrain from popping or breaking the skin, as this can lead to infection, scabbing and scarring. Keep the area covered and protected until it heals its-self.

By following these aftercare instructions diligently, you can promote proper healing and enhance the results of your laser tattoo removal treatment.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

If you notice weeping or cracking of the scab, or if you have any concerns regarding the healing process, it is crucial to contact your practitioner promptly for further guidance and evaluation.

In case of a persistent infection, it is recommended to seek medical guidance from your GP to obtain oral antibiotics. It is essential not to forcibly remove the scab, as this can cause significant trauma to the skin, potentially resulting in scarring.
